Sarah Fielke at City Quilter

Just had a lovely evening at City Quilter.

Sarah Fielke was there with her family and publisher promoting her new book “Hand Quilted with Love”. She showed us some of the quilts from her book and let us touch them!

Sarah Feilke (sorry about the bad photo, I was trying not to be too obtrusive).

This is the quilt on the cover, beautifully hand quilted of course. She had a “little chat with us” – her own words and told us how she hand appliques, sometimes for 13 hours a day. Her fabric designs are printed by Spotlight and are only available in Australia unfortunately.

While I was there I did have a tour of the shop and picked up just one blue fat quarter for my “bee” quilt and some gorgeous hand dyed thread called “lavender mist” by Caron. Dale showed us the new Grand Central fabrics that had just arrived that afternoon, which I resisted even though they had one in duck egg (robins egg) blue of the ceiling.

The gallery also had an amazing exhibition by fibre artist Deb Hyde

(you can see her work in the background behind Sarah). Her surfaces are made up of 1/2″ squares of fabric, carefully selected and placed to create portraits, with a trip around the world quilt pattern emerging from the skin tones. Stunning!

And then on to Eaterly for a glass of Prosecco on the roof.

Sarah is such an interesting speaker, isn’t she? I heard her talk last year when this book was in the production phase and also saw some of the quilts. The fabrics have been out for quite some time, but if you’d like some, I can try to get some for you. Let me know!

That’s so kind of you to offer Meredithe, thank you! I love her modern “upstream” graphics in aqua and pink but they’ve probably long gone. Maybe we could trade in future if there is anything I can get you.

Really jealous you got to hear Sarah Fielke talk – have always loved the Material Obsession books. Just spent a lovely day at an Oast workshop with Paula Doyle – applique blocks.with lots of useful hints. Lawrence not too impressed as not much sewing to show for such an interesting day, but lots of prep ready to sew. The Jo Blox girls are still talking about your shoes!

Glad you had a lovely day, I’m sure you learned a lot, he’ll be happy to wrap himself in your quilt when it’s done! Ah the shoes 🙂
