Brooklyn Art Library

We had another lovely day discovering a little more of Brooklyn, around Williamsburg.

Graffitti

Straight off the L train after the river, you emerge on Bedford Avenue. We have a few favourite haunts there including the indoor market and MeMe Antenna, where I picked up a lovely old blue Pyrex dish, a bargain because it had no lid, fine by me!

GreenTins

We then wandered down towards the river on 3rd and unexpectedly discovered Brooklyn Art Library, home of the Sketchbook Project. I’d heard about this and there it was!

Sketchbooks

You can buy a simple blank Sketchbook for $25, take it away, work on it, then send it back to be included in the library. They have shelves of thousands of individual works, sent back from all over the world.

RedBenches

It is also a meeting place for Art House members and has a little shop with vintage nic nacs and art supplies.

BrooklynLibrary

Then we found a little 50’s diner converted into a bar and it just happened to be happy hour, would you know it!

Diner

Crossing back over Bedford I saw a sign with a Union Jack on it pointing us towards Grace & Favor. A British Design Store run by the lovely Andrea, with artists work on the walls, pictures of the queen, top notch wallpaper and some very striking winged chandeliers (sorry no pics, you’ll have to check out the website!)

Another lovely day, following our noses and finding treasure.

Hoping to return to New York next year so will definitely put this on my itinerary – love the idea of all those sketch books. The diner looks like it will go on the list too.

Oooh, let me know when you’re over. The cocktails at the diner weren’t the best, can show you better!

I love libraries! I have also heard about the Sketchbook Project but haven’t participated yet. Were you allowed to touch or look through the books if you wanted?

Oh yes, and sit down and enjoy them. There were also little installations in the drawers so you can open them too.
